Dr. Laurencin is the University Professor and Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut (UConn), where he also serves as a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Laurencin also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Cato T. Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering at UConn. He previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Connecticut Convergence Institute for Translation in Regenerative Engineering and, before that, as Vice President of Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine at UConn, where he led a medical center with a budget in excess of $1 billion. Previous to that he served as Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief of the University of Virginia Health System and as the Lillian T. Pratt Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia where he was a University Professor. In addition, he was formerly a member of each of the FDA Device Panel and the FDA National Science Advisory Board. Dr. Laurencin is currently on the Board of Directors of MiMedx Group, Inc., a publicly-traded biologics company. Dr. Laurencin is NACD Directorship Certified®. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. In March 2025, Dr. Laurencin was awarded knighthood (Knight Commander of the Order of St. Lucia) with the approval of His Majesty King Charles III of England, on recommendation of the Prime Minister and Governor-General of St. Lucia.
