About Alkermes

Alkermes develops innovative medicines that fit with patients' real-world needs and behaviors. We believe that when medicines are both effective and easy to take, patients are more likely to take their prescriptions and experience better outcomes. Our products, both proprietary and partnered, include unique, sophisticated technologies designed to overcome common barriers to treatment success.

Our approach

Our approach to innovation is different from that of many biotechnology companies. We start by looking at disease from a patient-centric perspective, then develop therapies that take into account the daily challenges patients face when it comes to managing and treating their condition. Since our founding in 1987, we have focused on therapies for widespread, chronic diseases, such as diabetes and alcoholism, where we feel we have the opportunity to make the greatest impact.

Our products

Our products use novel molecules or sophisticated drug technologies designed to help ensure that patients consistently get the medicine they need, day after day.

Alkermes' products currently on the market include:

  • VIVITROL® (naltrexone for extended-release injectable suspension) - The first and only once-monthly injectable medication for alcohol dependence. VIVITROL uses our proprietary Medisorb® technology and is available in the U.S.
  • RISPERDAL® CONSTA® [(risperidone) long-acting injection] - The first and only long-acting atypical antipsychotic currently approved for the treatment of schizophrenia. RISPERDAL CONSTA uses our proprietary Medisorb® technology and is currently commercialized for the treatment of schizophrenia in more than 60 countries.

Our Pipeline

Each product we develop gives us new insights for the creation of future products, enhancing our ability to uncover opportunities that offer unique value for patients. New therapeutic solutions for the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders, addiction, diabetes, and other chronic diseases are among the products currently in development at Alkermes.
